Blackwell’s of Oxford is my favourite bookshop and is where I bought three-quarters of my library during my undergraduate years (I also used their Charing Cross branch during my time as a postgraduate in London). So I am delighted that they are repaying my loyalty by inviting me to give a talk on my book Into The Arena: The World Of The Spanish Bullfight.
However, by choosing 1pm on January 26th (details here), they have put it directly in the path of the city’s weekly animal rights protest. Every Thursday ‘Speak‘ – The Voice For The Rights Of Animals - and their affiliates begin outside the Zoology Faculty of Oxford University on South Parks Road (where I began my own studies) and end up outside the Sheldonian Theatre, directly opposite Blackwells (where my own Oxford studies ended with the confering of my degrees), protesting the use of animals in scientific experiments by the university.
I wonder how they feel about bullfighting?
