My
house didn't have a garden when I moved in. I constructed a small garden
in the small back yard, bringing in soil, compost and manure and making leaf-mould,
and planted a plum tree.
Jane Grigson's Vegetable Book contains this:
'In my most optimistic moments, I see every town ringed again with small
gardens, nurseries, allotments, greenhouses, orchards, as it was in the
past, an assertion of delight and human scale.' I've tried to do just
this in the area where I garden and construct.
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/royal-navy-carrier-hms-prince-wales-exercise-nato-norway-b986464.html
This rubbish, in the allotments taken over by the proposed garden church
(without considering such issues as allotment law) wasn't put there by
me. The rubbish doesn't seem to have bothered the garden church at all
but I pointed out to them the possible hazards to wildlife, possible
hazards for people, after contacting the allotment office about the
problem. This is one of the issues I brought to the attention of Lu
Skerratt-Love. I don't say that this is one of the issues which caused
'great upset' to Lu, although it may have been an unwelcome reminder
that the site involved challenges, difficulties to be overcome, and not
just a blissful reminder of God's creation.
As for my activities not in the area but at home, I can claim that I'm
blameless. Nobody in the area has every complained about me and none of
my neighbours have ever complained about me. My interests and activities
cause no harm. They include reading, woodworking, metalworking and
classical music. I don't play music loud. I don't practise the violin
and viola any longer. When I did, I practised for three or more hours a
day over a long period of time. I studied with the Hungarian violinist
Rudolf Botta. I contributed to a work composed by Philip Venables, a
violin concerto which included words as well as music, a tribute to
Rudolf Botta. With some others, I contributed words, in my case,
words to do with violin technique. The violin concerto received
its world premiere at the Proms Concert in the Royal Albert Hall on 17
August, 2018.

8 October, 2021
Dear Dr Ling,
There are matters which I need to bring to your attention, and the
attention of Lu Skerratt-Love. I can't use the most convenient
method, for me, email,
since you've blocked my emails. This is simply a short preliminary
note. I don't discuss in any detail these matters.
Instead of using paper and envelope, buying a stamp and using the
post, I've chosen instead to call at the Church Army building and
deliver this
note in person and I intend to use this method whenever I can
justify a further communication to you or to Lu Skerratt-Love. I've
decided further
to make use of 'open' communication, without enclosure in an
envelope. The matters I need to bring to your attention aren't
confidential.
Banning, blocking and attempts at blatant censorship should be
avoided by people in any organization which values its reputation.
Your decision
to block email from me was completely unjustifiable. All I had done
was to send emails to a few people and organizations to inform them
of my
concerns about the proposal to set up a garden church at the Morley
Street Allotment site. The reasons I gave and the evidence I gave
were to do
with matters of allotment law, security and safety. I've documented
the issues in detail and published them on my Website. The
documentation will
be extended to take note of future developments. The people and
organizations who received my emails - few in number - could be
expected to find the issue of a garden church relevant, for example,
St Marks Church. Lu Skerratt-Love had publicized the issue on the St
Marks
Church Website. The tone of my emails was courteous. I used Lu
Skerratt-Love's Church army email address because I had no
alternative.
This was the only email address I could find.I felt at the time that
it was unwise of her not to make available an alternative email
address.
Lu Skerratt-Love's decision to complain to the police, her attempt
to have me remove material from my own Website, was disastrously
misguided,
like your decision to block my emails. Lu Skerratt-Love's twitter
page is full of complaints against the police but she
chose to turn to the police (as an alternative to prayer, perhaps,
or to supplement prayer). This, to me, was wasting police time. I
don't claim that it
was wasting police time in the strict legal sense but if people
demand action from the police for the flimsiest of reasons, or no
good reason at all,
or for thoroughly bad reasons, then the police have less time
available for all the other issues, far more important issues, which
they have to deal
with, such as doing something to curb the excesses of Extinction
Rebellion, rape, violent crime, and many more.
I don't make demands myself, although I think that an apology is due
from Lu Skerratt-Love and yourself. If you find the arguments and
evidence
I've put forward on my Website unpersuasive, then by all means let
me have - better still, publicize - your counter arguments and
evidence.
As I say, this is only a preliminary stage. I've already spent a
great deal of time and effort on these matters and I'm willing to do
far more. Any
necessary communication with you or Lu Skerratt-Love will be by
personal delivery of a note.
I hope you will be able to bring this note to the attention of Lu
Skerratt-Love. Obviously, you're free to bring it to the attention
of other people as well.
Best Wishes,
Paul Hurt
You seem not to have read the email I sent to you today
at 16.04, or have not read it with nearly enough care. I asked for
specific information. One of the police officers who called today wrote
your name on the 'Community Police Protection Notice' but there's no
indication on the document that you were the person who authorized the
issuing of the notice. I made it clear that I needed certainty on this
point before making a complaint (to the Professional Standards
Department of South Yorkshire Police.)
Other issues: the Community Protection Notice was issued
with only the testimony of Lu Skerratt-Love, You - or the person who
issued the notice if it was not you - made no attempt to contact me to
obtain my testimony. If I had been contacted, I could easily show, with
evidence and documentation, that Lu Skerratt-Love has received no emails
from me. Other evidence is provided on the Web page I cite in my earlier
email to you. The notice takes for granted, without giving any evidence,
that my conduct is allegedly 'having a detrimental effect, of a
persistent and continuing nature on the quality of life of those in the
locality.' This is a preposterous, in fact malicious accusation - I'm
having no such effect. Lu Skerratt-Love, so far as I know, does not live
in the neighbourhood. It is Lu Skerratt-Love who is harassing me. This
is the third time she has contacted the police about me in connection
with emails or my Website, when throughout, she must have known that due
to the action of Tim Ling of the Church Army, all emails from me to her
and other members of the Church Army were blocked. I don't know how much
more conclusive could the evidence be that the accusations of Lu
Skerratt-Love are without any basis.
One further matter. I have a policy, stated on the Home
Page of the site, of not quoting emails in whole or in part without the
permission of the sender. I think it would be very useful to quote your
email to me. Unless I hear from you to the contrary, making it clear
that you do not give permission, I'll use the content of your email f
for subsidiary purposes in my submission to the Professional Standards
Department.
I make it completely clear to you that it's out of the
question for me to delete material from my Website as a result of police
pressure. The police have no power to censor material of the kind found
on my Website. Lu Skerratt-Love has no power to force me to delete
material. We live, of course, in a liberal democracy, not a
totalitarian state, or a state with very limited freedoms.
A
Russian attack on Ukraine could take place with “no notice”, a UK
defence minister said.
James Heappey, the armed forces minister, said he fears that “we are
closer than we’ve been on this continent” to war “for 70 years”.
He said Russia was well enough prepared for an invasion that it had gone
beyond diplomatic showmanship.
He told the BBC: “All of the combat enablers are in place and my fear is
that if all of this was just about a show to win leverage in diplomacy
that doesn't require the logistics, the fuel, the medical supplies, the
bridging assets, the unglamorous stuff that actually makes an invasion
force credible, but doesn't attract headlines. Yet all of that is now in
place too.

Christianity is all about the person of Jesus Christ. Unlike anyone else who
ever lived, he claimed to be God’s one and only Son, the rightful Lord of
the universe. Yet he came into this world with the sole purpose of rescuing
those who live in his world as rebels before his throne. Naturally, all of
us fit this description; none of us lives as if he is the rightful Lord. Our
only hope is in the forgiveness and new life he offers through his death.

Luke and Sue take us on a gripping journey across the UK and to Antigua, as
we hear the stories of the frontline volunteers motivated by the compassion
of Jesus Christ – which is the heart and soul of Street Pastors.
We see God’s dignity – caring, helping and listening – in a world where it
is in short supply, whether in a one-off conversation with a vulnerable
late-night reveller or life-saving words to a suicidal homeless person.
It refreshingly inspires us at a time when we have been locked out of church
buildings to get out there and be the living body of Christ (as one
volunteer said, “God's hands, His eyes and His feet”) in our streets,
railway stations and schools.’

into the town centre to provide practical help and support to boozed-up
party-goers unable to look after themselves.
Coordinator Sally Leonard, 58, said: “Our main role is to listen, care and
help.
"We make sure people get home safely by, for example, re-connecting friends
when they lose each other.
“We give out flip flops, water, and lollipops. And we have tissues, wet
wipes, hair bands and vomit bowls! We also carry chargers so people can
charge their phones.”

'A bottle of water for those who are dehydrated, a pair of flip-flops

without a coat, a phone call to track down missing friends or arrange a taxi
home, or simply a listening ear – all are part of a night’s work for a
Street Pastor.
Comments:
One of the Street Pastors' objectives - in fact the Street Pastors' most
important objective - is to save sinners. Apart from that, the Street
Pastors' reliance on prayer should make it very undesirable for a public
body to give a donation. It's outrageous that The Office of Police and Crime
Commissioner West Mercia Police is subsidizing an organisation with this
objective. None of the activities mentioned, such as providing water to
people out late at night, can possibly be regarded as so vital as to justify
this donation. There are so many causes with a far, far greater claim on the
generosity of donors.
West Mercia

sex comments
Mr Osmund-Smith, who is also Telford
and Wrekin Council chaplain was
quoted in the article in August
saying lots of reports about child
sex exploitation were sent to senior
officers.
He told the paper: "Because it was going to so many people, no-one
was really taking responsibility for it.
"I was never quite sure the things we were reporting were resulting
in any serious action."
It is understood Mr Osmund-Smith is being investigated to see if his
police chaplain role is compatible with that of head of the local
street pastors and the chaplain at Telford and Wrekin Council.
Last week, Telford Conservative MP Lucy Allan called for an inquiry
into why child sex abuse has been going on in Telford for "over 20
years".
West Mercia Police has three pastors, with one of the positions
paid.
The role involves offering confidential support to staff.
Mr Osmund-Smith declined to comment.

ince ancient times (ok, 1998), Ship of Fools has been sending Mystery
Worshippers to churches worldwide. Travelling incognito, they ask those
questions which go to the heart of church life: How long was the sermon?
How hard the pew? How cold was the coffee? How warm the welcome?
The only clue they have been there at all is the Mystery Worshipper
calling card, dropped discreetly into the collection plate.

An exciting post to lead a new team based in
Rotherham requires an inspiring leader who
understands church finances and operations and wants
to release leaders to resource Christian churches in
every community which are effective in making
disciples and in seeking to transform our society
and God’s world.
Three Project Support vacancies reporting to this
post have been created to bring good bookkeeping
procedures and efficient administration systems to
Anglican churches in the Diocese of Sheffield.
Your customers will be Church Treasurers,
Churchwardens and other office holders who are
usually volunteers serving their community and this
project will free church leaders to be even more
effective locally.
Two existing Generous Giving Officers will also
report to the team leader to encourage giving
generously for the mission of the Church across
South Yorkshire and into the East Riding.

The critical material concerning the
Methodist Church in Sheffield appears on one of the
pages of my Website cited below.
The address of my Website is www.linkagenet.com
The site is very wide-ranging and varied but these
are the pages concerned with Christian religion (the
focus is the Church of England but I also discuss
Methodist and Roman Catholic churches):
All these pages make use of Large
Page Design - the pages are wide as well as
long. They can't be viewed adequately using the
small screen of a portable device.
My Website does have very high Google rankings
for a wide range of search terms, currently and
over a very long period. A few very recent
examples for some search terms:

Christianity remembrance redemption 1 /

The Methodist Church is concerned with
evangelism, of course. One of my activities -
amongst a large number of other activities - is
counter-evangelism. I'll be sending a copy
of this email to Christ Church, Darnall
(Minister: Lisa Quarmby.)

I've published comments on you and, also,
Anna de Castro in the form of a short joint profile on
my Website. I give below the address of the page where
you can find the material.

We believe the message of Christianity is the best news
in the world and that it’s relevant to everyone. It’s
simple, it’s beautiful, it’s about God and his love for
us, it’s about a great rescue and a man called Jesus.
It’s a message that has changed our lives and binds us
together as a church community. We would love to share
this good news with you!

A
few things which you may find useful, including some
background information which you may find useful. No
reply needed, unless of course you think a reply is
called for.
A
page of my Website www.linkagenet.com/education/capability.htm gives
information - and much more than information - about
a Christian Headteacher at a Sheffield school whose
grossly misguided decision to subject me to
capability proceedings has had very far reaching
consequences, not least for him. The essential
information is conveyed in the second main column of
text (it includes an image of a certificate.) Even
though it isn't directly relevant to the issues
raised by my experiences of the Diocese, Sheffield
Churches and the Church Army, it's important, I'd
claim, for various reasons. One is that after
subjecting me to the procedures outlined in the
page, he then went on to subject Sarah Frost, a
science technician at the school, to similar
procedures. Capability procedures call into question
the competence of the person subject to the
procedures, of course. In the case of Sarah Frost, I
can state with complete confidence that she was not
just a very competent technician but a good,
conscientious technician. Sarah Frost is the woman
who told me about the alleged abuse of her husband
whilst at St Mark's Church. I draw your attention to
the page on capability proceedings for another
reason: it shows how determined and thorough I am in
putting a case and in efforts to right a wrong, as I
see it. Another reason: in the column of the right
of the page I give a little information about my
work at Amnesty International. I've taken a close
interest in campaigning techniques from my
campaigning for various causes, including animal
welfare and human rights, and I gave arguments and
evidence as to why some techniques used by Amnesty
International were demonstrably ineffective, or not
as effective as they might be. I persuaded my
Amnesty Group to take the matter to the National AGM
and the proposal was accepted almost unanimously.
I've taken other matters to the national level,
including anti-personnel mines. Opposition to their
use is now AI national policy but it wasn't national
policy until I began my initiative.
I
recognize that the Diocese has to be allowed to
investigate the issues and to take whatever action
the Diocese considers appropriate but obviously, I
have my own freedom of action, to respond and take
whatever action I think is justifiable. This is
simply a suggestion, then, or something that the
Diocese could consider: the Diocese could consider
referring investigation and possible action after
investigation to a person or group of people outside
the Diocese. This is for the obvious reason that a
number of Church people in the Diocese are named in
my Website pages, not for the reason that I accuse
the Diocese of potential bias. I don't have any
suggestions to make about the seniority of people
carrying out investigations. As a matter of fact,
very senior people in the Church of England have
failed completely in matters to do with safeguarding
and abuse.
A
very unfortunate aspect of so many investigations is
that the people requested or instructed to carry out
investigations in an organization is that when, as
often happens, one party to a conflict or dispute
seems to be disadvantaged by the result of the
investigation, the tendency is to blame the people
who carried out the investigation.
St
Mark's Church has given me the useful information
that the Diocese is investigating matters of concern
which I've raised, making it clear that these won't
be concerned only with the matter of alleged abuse
at St Mark's Church, but without giving me any
detail. My view, which I've made known to various
people in the Church of England in Sheffield, is
that the Church should address issues of
safeguarding which go beyond safeguarding as the
word is usually employed in the Church now,
safeguarding against sexual and physical abuse. My
pages on Christian religion on my Website give
information, often detailed information, about a
range of other safeguarding issues.
I'm concerned - very concerned - that STC produced a
video to publicize their 'Streets of Light'
iniative which showed a child standing near an upper
window on an unsafe surface to attach decorations to
the window. An accident, a fall through a window,
would have catastrophic results, for the child,
obviously, but for the Church of England's
reputation. I pointed out that a safety warning
about the use of candles and unsafe wiring would
prevent, or help to prevent, the possibility of a
house fire. Granted, these accidents are uncommon,
but as a matter of fact, the rate of house fires
increases at Christmas - I provide the evidence on
my Website.
I'm concerned - very concerned - that the organizers
of the garden church planned for allotments near my
own allotments paid absolutely no attention to
matters to do with safety and security until I
pointed out the dangers. Again, the information is
on my Website. I'm
concerned - very concerned - that the Church Army
blocked my emails when I pointed out the problems.
The Diocese and the Church Army are separate but
linked entities. I think it's essential that the
role of Church Army people is adequately
scrutinized.
Dear Elina Penttila,
I'll try to keep this email short. A
few matters which I hope you may find useful in
connection with the issues I've raised. No reply

I'm writing a profile of you for my Website www.linkagenet.com The site does
have very high rankings in Google for a wide range of search terms. To give
just two examples, the current Google ranking for the search term
Christianity remembrance redemption is 1 / 6,240,000. The current Google
ranking for the search term ethical depth is 3 / 703,000,000. The Home Page
gives ready access to my pages on Christian religion, including a 'FEFE'
page on Sheffield Churches, the Diocese and the Church Army, and a FEFE page
on safeguarding and abuse in the Church of England. (FEFE: Free expression,
fresh expressions.) The material on the Church Army is cause for great
concern. I emailed Lu Skerratt-Love of the Church Army Research Unit headed
by Dr Tim Ling, together with a few other recipients, in early September,
2021. The email was matter of fact, outlining concerns mainly to do with
security and safety in allotments near to my own allotments where a garden
Church was planned. Lu Skerratt-Love had publicized the proposals at St
Mark's Church and St John's Church. The email never reached Lu Skerratt-Love.
It was blocked by Tim Ling, who quickly blocked any emails from me to a
large number of Church Army recipients. The banning/blocking is still in
force. On 23 November, 2021, South Yorkshire Police informed me that they
had received a complaint from Lu Skerratt-Love about alleged emails from me.
She had made it clear that these emails must stop. But she must have known
that she hadn't received any emails from me. I can prove that this is the
case. This was, to me, a clear-cut waste of police time. The matter has
involved needless demands on the police and needless demands on my time. My
Website gives further information about the matter. The site also contains,
in the page on safeguarding and abuse in the Church of England, very
critical comments on the Church Army Lead Evangelist Kinder Kalsi. I won't
inform you when my profile of you has been completed and published on the
Website. I won't mention in the profile any of these matters - there's no
need. The profile will simply give a fair-minded but critical discussion of
your thought, beliefs and practice, with the emphasis on your beliefs.

Kinder Kalsi isn't a poor speaker at all but in
this video
https://m.facebook.com/ibringyougoodnews/posts/
2535299096581426?locale=sw_KE
his talking is surely applied to a ridiculous
project. It shows him in Sheffield City Centre just before 7 a.m., as people
are arriving for work. He explains that he's not usually up this early - an
exception is 'getting on an aeroplane, for holiday.'
He explains that he has 767 angels 'to deliver' with
his helpers. The angels are fluffy toys. Most of the shops are still closed,
so the angels are placed anywhere where they will be supported and can be
found. He's shown putting one of them on top of a bollard, where it can
easily fall off. He says that people 'might' find an angel 'when they come
into work this morning.'
There seems to be nothing fixed to the angels to
explain why they've been placed in the street but according to a report in
'The Star' newspaper, each angel has a card - which must be a very small one
- with the message 'You are not alone, you are loved by God this Christmas,
take this home as a reminder.'
He won't have been alone at Christmas and he may not
be able to enter into the state of desolation of the lonely. This message,
calculated to inspire a sudden rush of warm feeling in whoever reads it,
he'll hope, comes with the burden of dogma. The dogma reveals a hideous
message rather than a message of hope. People who turn down or are
indifferent to the Christian message are doomed, according to this dogma.
Does Kinder Kalsi believe that Sikhs and other non-Christians go to hell or
not? Can he explain?
The vast majority of people who find an angel are
likely to be mystified, puzzled, but only momentarily. They'll have other
things to think of. This distribution of the dolls was surely a pointless
exercise. The people who knitted these dolls were wasting their time, or
could have spent the time on more important things.
The dolls with the message won't transform the
city centre or mark the beginning of its transformation. It won't solve
problems of crime, the difficulties facing businesses, the personal
difficulties of many people, unemployment and so many others. Kinder Kalsi
has a job. He takes flights to holiday destinations.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10486995/CHRISTOPHER-HART-Jimmy-Carrs-cancel-culture-challenge-Holocaust-gag-not-work.html
Dear Inspector Smith,
I'm using information in this email as the basis of
my complaint to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
The complaint I intend to make has a wide-ranging
context but the central issue is this: the response of the North
West Policing team - or rather, one or more members of the team - to
allegations made by Lu Skerratt-Love, who is employed by the Church
Army. I have full documentation, all the evidence needed to show
that the action taken has been grossly unfair and has used police
time and police resources in a completely unjustifiable way. I can
easily show that the allegations involve falsification.
On 8 September, 2021, I emailed Tim Ling, Andy Wier
and Lu Skerratt-Love of the Church Army to bring to their attention
difficulties concerning a 'Garden Church' which, it was proposed,
would be founded at some allotments near to my own allotments on the
Morley Street Site. (The Home Page of my Website includes images of
my allotments.) The Church Army has an interest in Christian events
in places other than Church buildings, as well as ones which do take
place in Church buildings, of course. Lu Skerratt-Love had
publicized the proposed Garden Church on the Websites of St Mark's
Church and St John's Church, Sheffield. I pointed out difficulties
to do with allotment law, including the fact that, as I saw it, the
existing tenants had no legal right to allow the Garden Church to
use the allotments for this purpose. I outlined these and other
difficulties in a series of emails to the Allotment Officer. I
outlined problems to do with security and safety, including problems
to do with crime which I'd experienced personally and others on the
site had experienced. The inaugural meeting of the Garden Church
never took place in September and has still not taken place. The
Garden Church's Facebook Page gives as the reasons for delaying the
first meeting of the Garden Church 'problems to do with security,'
so it seems that my representations to the organizers of the Garden
church were found useful.
The response of Tim Ling (the Head of the Church Army
Research Unit where Andy Wier and Lu Skerratt-Love are employed) was
to block my emails to all members of the Research Unit but he had
already blocked my emails to Lu Skerratt-Love. She never received
the email from me, then, she has never received any emails from me
from early September 2021 to the present. No other members of the
Church Army have received emails from me since that time. I have
conclusive evidence in the form of computer records to show that
this is so.
On 22 November, 2021, I received a card left by PC
Sarah Forsythe of the neighbourhood policing team asking me to
contact her. I did that, and received the information that South
Yorkshire Police had received a complaint from Lu Skerratt-Love
about my alleged emails to her and the alleged annoyance caused. I
pointed out to Sarah Forsythe that Lu Skerratt-Love had received no
emails from me, since emails were blocked.
In October, I had received a phone call from a member
of South Yorkshire Police asking me to remove material on Lu
Skerratt-Love from my Website, since she had made a complaint. None
of the material on my Website is abusive. South Yorkshire Police has
absolutely no right to censor the content of legitimate Websites in
this way. I think it would have been far better to have contacted me
by another means. A phone call doesn't provide the evidence which
communication by email provides. I hope that your records will
provide the evidence for the phone call. My own phone records will
almost certainly provide evidence of a phone call from South
Yorkshire Police but I haven't examined the records yet.
Now to the most recent communication from South
Yorkshire Police to me, the 'Community Protection Notice - Written
Warning' issued on 15 February, 2022. You'll have a copy of this
available, I'm sure, so I don't need to quote extensively here. I
will be providing a much fuller account in my complaint to the
Independent Office for Police Conduct. The PC's who called at my
home address were PC 364 Dan Dickinson and PC 251 Laura Thompson. I
find the document seriously flawed, with multiple errors, but I'll
only mention one aspect now - the fact that yet again, Lu Skerratt-Love
has complained about non-existing emails from me to her, although
this document also mentions emails from me to other members of the
Church Army. I've approached the Church Army to make clear the
seriousness of the situation. No members of the Church Army have
received emails from me since the ones received by two members of
the Church Army as long ago as early September 2021. I don't claim
that Lu Skerratt-Love has been guilty of 'wasting police time.' I
don't have a legal background and I'm not in a position to make that
claim. I do claim that my time has been wasted and the time of
members of South Yorkshire Police has been wasted.
There's yet another very disturbing issue with full
documentation, from 24 November, 2015. The attending PC at that time
was PC 3571 Stevens, based at Hayes House. Full information is
supplied on the page cited and, in much more detail, on another page
of my site, www.linkagenet.com/education/capability.htm in
columns 3 and 4 of the page. This page, like the other pages
mentioned her, makes use of 'Large Page Design:' it's wide as well
as long. These pages can't be viewed adequately on the small screen
of a portable device.
The documents issued to me were issued without
contacting me first. If I had been contacted, I would very easily
have been able to show that the complaints against me were without
foundation. It's cause for concern, great concern, that South
Yorkshire Police - or the people authorizing the action are willing
to take action in cases like this. The time and resources used in
these cases - the time and resources include necessary paperwork and
recording, of course - could surely have been much better employed
on cases of genuine seriousness. To send PC's to a person's house in
cases where no evidence exists to justify the action may lead to
consequences for the PC's - anger may be directed at them. I haven't
been angry with the PC's at all. I don't mention the names of any of
them on my Website. As i see it, the Independent Office for Police
Conduct needs to examine very carefully the policing issues raised
by these matters. On my Website, I don't mention the names of any of
the PC's. I sent an email to PC Sarah Forsythe which included this,
an extract from an email to another South Yorkshire Police
recipient: 'I've every reason
to believe that Sarah Forsythe is a very good and conscientious
police constable and I've no wish to cause her difficulties. I hope
a way can be found to resolve the issues by means other than a
complaint.'
I've already brought to the attention of Sergeant
Simon Kirkham my response to the Community Protection Notice issued
to me and I've found his response to me very, very poor, far below
the standard I would expect from a Sergeant of South Yorkshire
Police. I don't provide the evidence here but I will be providing it
in my complaint to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
There's a further issue where I have to say that I can't prove my
case. It may be that it wasn't Sergeant Kirkham who issued the
instruction to PC Forsythe to contact me about Lu Skerratt-Love's
baseless complaint. Your own records will presumably clarify the
matter. On the evidence, I have Sergeant Kirkham did authorize the
recent action, the so-called Community Protection Notice. To me, it
seems likely that in his decision to proceed, Sergeant Kirkham's
Christian beliefs were not in the least irrelevant. Lu Skerratt-Love
is a Christian too, of course. Sergeant Kirkham has been involved in
the work of the Christian Police Association. I provide further
information about the Association on the page www.linkagenet.com/themes/fefe-free-expression-south-yorkshire-police.htm I
would make the point that a Christian police officer making an
important decision regarding a complaint by a Christian against an
individual whose Website contains critical material on Christianity
should take every care to ensure that the action taken is fair and
not disproportionate.
But I have good evidence that Sergean Kirkham has
acted recklessly, or in a way which pays absolutely no attention to
the need for neutrality in matters to do with faith. The section of
the Document, 'Details of the conduct' include this: 'In some of
these correspondences you make mention of her personal faith.' it
isn't the business of South Yorkshire Police to forbid 'mention of
personal faith' in emails or other communications - but again, I
point out, that this accusation relates to non-existent
communications. It isn't the business of South Yorkshire Police to
censor emails and other communictions which 'make mention of
personal faith.' This is an issue with potentially great
consequences for the reputation of South Yorkshire Police, which of
course has to protect people of all faiths or people like myself
with no Christian beliefs or other religious beliefs. If Simon
Kirkham didn't write that, then I very much hope you will bring this
email to the attention of whoever did write it.
Best Wishes,
Paul Hurt
I'm using information in this email as the basis of
my complaint to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
The complaint I intend to make has a wide-ranging
context but the central issue is this: the response of the North
West Policing team to allegations made by Lu Skerratt-Love, who is
employed by the Church Army. I have full documentation, all the
evidence needed to show that the action taken has been grossly
unfair and has used police time and police resources in a completely
unjustifiable way. I can easily show that the allegations involved
falsification.
(The Home Page of my Website includes images of
my allotments.) I pointed out difficulties to do with allotment law,
including the fact that, as I saw it, the existing tenants had no
legal right to allow the Garden Church to use the allotments for
this purpose. I outlined these and other difficulties in a series of
emails to the Allotment Officer. I outlined problems to do with
security and safety, including problems to do with crime which I'd
experienced personally and others on the site had experienced. The
inaugural meeting of the Garden Church never took place in September
and has still not taken place. The Garden Church's Facebook Page
gives as the reasons for delaying the first meeting of the Church
'problems to do with security,' so it seems that my representations
were found useful.
I have the evidence to
make this clear without the least doubt.
On 22 November, 2021, I received a card left by Sarah
Forsythe asking me to contact her. I did that, and received the
information that South Yorkshire Police had received a complaint
from Lu Skerratt-Love about my alleged emails to her and the alleged
annoyance caused. I pointed out to Sarah Forsythe that Lu Skerratt-Love
had received no emails from me, since emails were blocked.
In October, I had received a phone call from a member
of South Yorkshire Police asking me to remove material on Lu
Skerratt-Love from my Website, since she had complained. None of the
material on my Website is abusive. South Yorkshire Police has
absolutely no right to censor the content of legitimate Websites in
this way. I should not have been contacted in this way. A phone call
doesn't provide the evidence which communication by email provides.

A Determination by the Bishop of Sheffield in the light of the Report of
the Commissaries following a Visitation at Sheffield Cathedral 1st
November 2020 to 28th February 2021
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/54733839e4b02590326819da/t/6054833916c84434fc302535/1616151354179/Final+Visitation+Determination+2021.pdf
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/17526094/dad-threatened-cut-baby-pregnant-avoids-jail/
in relation to the issues addressed in the Visitation, I must
acknowledge my own responsibility. Throughout 2020, and even before, I
failed to find a swifter, more effective way to address matters of which
I was being made aware, and I profoundly regret this.
Section 1: The culture and HR ethos of the Cathedral The Visitation Team
found evidence of an environment at the Cathedral which has tolerated
bullying and blaming and has been characterised by a fear of speaking
out. There is a pattern of people who have fallen out of favour at the
Cathedral subsequently exiting the organisation, and the perception of
this for onlookers among the staff and volunteers has only served to
reinforce their fears and concerns ... In addition, a lack of
cross-department engagement has meant weak relationships, which have in
turn resulted in poor interactions and have created room for distrust
and misunderstanding.
In the light of this, I direct that Chapter should: 1. Engage an expert
third party to undertake an audit of senior management skills,
capabilities and management styles, to ensure that all staff, but
especially senior managers, are equipped with the requisite experience
and abilities to enable a journey to a healthy and happy future for the
Cathedral, including, eg, where appropriate the introduction of
performance management plans that specifically seek to strengthen and
develop staff. Where appropriate, individuals should be encouraged to
achieve qualifications from national awarding bodies. 2. Introduce and
sustain a fully-fledged pattern of routine line-management and staff
meetings across the Cathedral, together with annual appraisals, properly
recorded, and with goals agreed for each employee which are specific,
measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. 3. Fully review and
refresh the Staff Handbook, in particular reducing the warning for
failure
Section 3: Chapter’s handling of complaints The Visitation Team found
that the Cathedral Complaints Procedure raises a question about its
robustness for matters relating to senior managers, on account of their
own place in the procedure, but found no evidence that Chapter saw the
invidious position in which this placed senior members of staff. The
Team also heard from multiple people that they were not confident in the
Cathedral complaints and grievance processes. A few participants in the
Visitation even noted that some who had raised a complaint or grievance
were no longer in employment or service of the Cathedral, and that life
could become difficult for some people who raised complaints or
grievances. In relation to two specific complaints processes in 2020,
the Team found evidence that recommendations had not been followed
through. It has to be admitted that in these instances, the poor
behaviour of complainants was not helpful. However, this fact does not
remove from Chapter its obligations as a governing body to fulfil the
role of objective oversight. The Visitation Team has encouraged me to
put some parameters in place for Chapter to guide its future handling of
any complaints. In the light of this, I direct that Chapter should: 1.
Ensure that any complaints against members of the Cathedral staff are
handled with an independence and thoroughness not evident in the cases
reviewed by the Visitors. 2. Ensure that complaints are handled in
strict accordance with the ACAS code, with appropriately expert HR
advice 3. On the first such occasion, provide me with an account on
completion to reassure me that due process has been followed, and
followed through.

Anne Richards, the
National Adviser for Mission Theology for the Church of England, has been
dipping into the dispatches of our Mystery Worshippers, who drop in on
churches incognito and then file a visitor’s report of the experience. The
results are not always pretty. She asks: How can churches welcome people so
they don’t end up feeling invisible and lonely?
SHIP OF FOOLS HAS an
interesting section, the Mystery Worshipper. The premise: a brave soul
ventures into a service at a church they have never visited before and
reports on what it is like. The anonymous Mystery Worshipper answers
questions about if and how they were welcomed to the service as a newcomer,
what the experience of attending church was like, what happened afterwards
and, crucially, whether they would consider going back again! All kinds of
churches are reviewed from many different denominations, with a huge range
of styles of worship and size of congregation. I find these little reviews
remarkably telling. One person recently reported feeling like ‘the invisible
man’, and in answer to the question, ‘Did the service make you feel glad to
be a Christian?’ the answer was, ‘Well, perhaps, but an extremely lonely
one!’
